The Detroit Historical Museum has been named one of 29 national finalists for the Institute of Museum and Library Services’ 2018 National Medal for Museum and Library Service for Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward. The National Medal is the nation’s highest honor given to museums and libraries for community service! Over the past 24 years, the award has celebrated 182 institutions that demonstrated extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service. National Medal winners will be announced later this spring. Representatives from winning institutions will receive their medals at a ceremony on May 24 in Washington, D.C.
Detroit 67 has received additional honors, including:
- The Michigan Museum Association’s 2017 Peninsulas Prize for our unique collaboration with partners at the Detroit Institute of Arts and Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History.
- Recognition as a 2017 news highlight by Crains Detroit Business, the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News.
- A 2018 Michigan Notable Book award from the Library of Michigan for our companion volume Detroit 1967: Origins, Impacts, Legacies.
- In May 2018, Detroit Historical Society curatorial and exhibitions team will travel to Phoenix, AZ to speak at the American Alliance of Museums annual meeting about the process of creating the Detroit 67: Perspectives.
