Self-Led Touring Policy

Teachers and educators can utilize the Dossin Great Lakes Museum and Detroit Historical Museum as a teaching space by planning a self-led tour. 

To ensure a quality museum experience for all visitors, we request that groups contact education staff in advance to schedule their visiting time at 313-833-1801 or education@detroithistorical.org. Requests are scheduled on a first come, first served basis. 

The Dossin Great Lakes Museum and Detroit Historical Museum reserve the right to refuse unscheduled self-led groups larger than 30, based on daily tour capacity.

The Detroit Historical Museum is located on Woodward Avenue at Kirby in Midtown Detroit. The Dossin Great Lakes Museum is located on the shores of historic Belle Isle. Map your route to visit below.

Ticketing F.A.Q.s

Tickets are valid any time during public open hours. They are not date specific. Admission tickets are non-refundable. You can also purchase tickets at the door. If your group is larger than 15 people, please click here to request a self-led group reservation.

Student - any enrolled student with an ID who attends school.

Senior - anyone 65 years or older is eligible to pay the discounted senior admission fee.

Educator - any teacher, library, or paraprofessional with ID, staff badge, or pay stub.

Active military - anyone with a current military ID from any country.

First responder - any police officer, firefighter, or EMS provider with a badge or ID.

Senior, student, educator, active military, and first responder tickets can only be purchased at the admissions desk at one of our museums and not online. We will accept a range of identifications, including:

  • State driver's license
  • State identification card
  • City of Detroit ID card (D-ID)
  • Library card
  • Student ID
  • Teacher, library, paraprofessional ID
  • Teacher, library, paraprofessional staff badge or pay stub
  • Current military ID from any country

Detroit Historical Society Members are not required to purchase tickets in advance. Show your membership card at the front desk in order to use your member benefits.

Dossin Great Lakes Museum parking is free for vehicles with a valid State of Michigan Recreation Passport or a Day Pass. Find our parking lot adjacent to the museum, off The Strand.

Detroit Historical Museum parking is $9 per car during museum hours, and it is not included with general admission ticket purchases. Find more parking information here.
