One apothecary/pharmaceutical balance. The balance case is made of fine-grained wood that has been finished with medium brown stain and a clear lacquer or varnish. It has a hinged glass top cover with a wood frame and decorative moldings along the base. Two metal balance arms with removable circular pans as well as a graduated scale are located on the white marble top surface of the case beneath the glass. A rectangular metal manufacturer's label on the front reads "Henry Troemner, Maker, Philadelphia, PA.," and "Cap. 1 Oz., No. 120.C.B., Made in U.S.A." A circular metal inspection tag on the center front has stamped text that reads "Penna. & N.Y.C. App'd Type 17, Serial W2." Two State of California adhesive inspection seals, dated 1956 and 1932, are also located on the front of the case. A metal adjusting knob for balance calibration is located beneath the circular tag. The underside of the case has two short fixed legs on the left side and two short adjustable screw-type legs on the right. The balance arms and pans are made of brass which has a chrome or nickel silver finish. The calibration knob and adjustable legs are made of brass.
