Balance, Analytical

One apothecary/pharmaceutical balance. The balance case is made of fine-grained wood that has been painted black. It has a hinged glass top cover with a wood frame and decorative moldings along the base. The rectangular top surface of the case (beneath the hinged top cover) is made of 0.25-inch thick black glass. Two metal balance arms with removable circular pans are located on the top of the black glass surface. A metal label on the center front reads "The Michigan Drug Co., Detroit, Mich.," and "Made in Germany." Beneath this label is a large metal adjusting knob for balance calibration which has stamped text that reads "Germany." Two shallow drawers with knob pulls are located in the base at the front. The balance arms, pans, and hardware are made of brass which has a chrome or nickel silver finish.

A set of weights was held in the drawers and consists of one small circular tin with a paper label and black text that reads "Drachm & Grain Weights, John M. Maris Co., Phila., New York." The set includes small square stamped aluminum weights in 10, 5, 2, 2, and 1 grains as well as stamped tin weights in 6, 3, and 1 grains and aluminum links in 5, 5, 4, 3, and 3 grains.
