Balance, Analytical
One medical/pharmaceutical balance. The balance is made of aluminum and consists of a central column which supports a balance arm that has circular pans hanging from each end. A long calibration needle is attached at the center of the balance arm and points downward to a graduated scale that is marked on the flange base which holds the central column. Stamped text on the flange reads "Crowell Apparatus Co., Indianapolis, Ind." The flange is bolted to a rectangular clear glass base that has short adjustable screw-type legs at each corner. The entire balance assembly is covered with a rectangular box-type housing which consists of clear glass panels on the sides and top and a wood framework along the edges. The front panel of the housing slides up in order to provide access to the balance. A knurled knob and slide rod on the right side of the housing allows the user to make fine calibration adjustments to weights which may be added on the side of the balance arm which has graduation marks. A black knob screw at the center front side of the glass base allows for adjustment of the height of the center column.
The balance includes a set of weights and tweezers that are contained in a small wooden box. The larger weights are made of cylindrically-shaped pieces of chrome-plated brass that are stamped in 1, 2, 2, 3, 10, 10, 20, and 50 grams. The smaller weights are made of rectangular and other shaped pieces of aluminum or tin that are stamped in 0.5, 0.2, 0.2, 0.1, and 0.05 grams as well 100, 100, and 50 mg.
