Bell, Nautical

One large signal bell from the engine room of the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company passenger steamship, City of Detroit III. The circular, dome-shaped bell is made of brass and has a large acorn nut at the center which holds it to an underlying brass mounting framework. The bell has two long curved brass arms with clappers at the ends that are located on opposite sides of the bell rim. Each clapper arm is stamped "Chas. Cory & Son, Inc., New York," at the base and has a spring-loaded mechanical action that is located beneath the bell. The mechanical action for each bell includes a brass pull rod with an eye at the end. A rope or cable would have been attached to each eye in order to activate the arm(s) and sound the bell. The entire bell assembly is mounted on a separate heavy gauge steel base that is painted red.
