Heilige Schrift

One Bible from St. James Lutheran Church, Detroit. It has a thick black leather cover with a decorative, depressed area at the center which has gold colored title text that reads "Heilige Schrift [Holy Scripture/Bible]." Decorative gold-colored drawings at the four corners show Bible figures along with references to scriptural text from the Books of Kings, Luke, Mark, and Samuel. The title, "Heilige Schrift," is also printed on the spine in gold-colored text along with decorative gold-colored designs. The front pages show an engraved image of Martin Luther as well as a discussion in English about the traditions of "The Family Bible." This Bible was published by A. J. Holman & Co. of Philadelphia and has a copyright date of 1904. The remaining pages are printed in German fraktur script on white paper. Several pages are included at the back for family photographs. A handwritten note on the front end page reads "This Bible was used in St. James pulpit by Dr. Bergener. It was replaced in the late nineteen thirties."
