Flagpole
One 50-foot tall nautical-style flagpole with a yardarm and gaff. The pole is made of steel that is 6 inches in diameter at the base and tapers to about 3 inches in diameter at the top. The base is set in a concrete foundation and is located near one of the rounded corners of a large triangular concrete slab on grade. A rectangular brass plaque is mounted in the concrete slab and has raised text that reads "Gift of Detroit News, 1960." A decorative steel ball is located at the top of the flagpole and a decorative collar is located on the slab surface at the base. A steel yardarm is located at about the 3/4 point of the pole with a gaff arm in front. Pulleys with halyards are located at the top, at the ends of the yardarm, and at the end of the gaff. Four cleats (one for each halyard) are located on the sides of the flagpole about 4 feet above the base. The City of Detroit flag is flying at the top of the flagpole, the American flag is flying at the end of the gaff, and the Canadian and State of Michigan flags are flying at opposite ends of the yardarm. The flagpole and fittings are all painted white. No manufacturer's markings are visible on the pole.
A large folding anchor rests on the concrete slab near the flagpole. See object number 1973.009.001 for details about this anchor.
