Font, Baptismal

One baptismal font from St. James Lutheran Church that was located at the southwest corner of Humboldt and Poplar Streets in Detroit. The elaborate octagonal-shaped font is made of fine-grained wood that has been assembled with nails, screws, and glue. It is painted pale yellow with antique gold-colored accents on various panels and trimwork. The removable top resembles a church steeple with decorative trim along the lower edge, eight sloped panels with ornamental details on the sides, and a square steeple with four gables and a cross at the top. The octagonal base has a wide flat top section with decorative rope and bead molding along the edges as well as decorative raised panels. A small round plastic pail is located at the center of the top for containing excess baptismal water. The top section rests on a narrow pedestal that has four wide feet at the bottom. The pedestal is constructed in the same style as the rest of the font. No maker's name or marks are shown.
