Gauge
One watchmaker's/jeweler's douzieme gauge made of brass with a nickel or chrome plating. The spring-type gauge measures douzieme where 1 douzieme = 1/12 of a ligne (line) = 0.0074 inches. The gauge is made of two hinged limbs where the hinge is closer to one end which gives the tool have a triangular shape. The shorter end of the tool has two small pincers which are used to measure the thickness of an object. The opposite end has a short metal arc that is stamped with units of measurement. With an object held in the pincers, the user reads the corresponding measurement with a pointer which rests on and moves along the metal arc. The gauge measures from 0 to 72 douzieme (0 to 6 lignes) or approximately 1/2 inch. The stationary limb also has a measuring scale stamped along its outer edge. No manufacturer's name or marks are visible.
