Horn, Powder

One powder horn made from an ox horn. The horn has a darkened, polished surface with a dark rounded wood plug that has been nailed in place at the base. The plug has a hole for the knotted end of a leather carrying thong. The other end of the leather thong would have been tied between two narrow raised ridges that are located on a carved wooden tip at the narrow end of the horn. An inscription of the side of the horn shows the initials, "Eb," as well as a verse that reads:

"I powder with my broth [brother] ball,
a heroe like do conquer all.
Tis best a brod [abroad] with foreign foes to fight,
And not at home to feel their hateful spite.
Where all our friends of every sex and age,
Will be exposed unto their crevel [cruel] rage.
Abel Prindel's horn made at No. 4 June 30th 1757."

Decorative carvings of leaves and scrollwork patterns are also shown with the text.
