Lantern
Lantern. A brass lantern bearing the name of James A. Van Dyke Company No. 5. The lantern is topped by an perching eagle and has three of its four shield-shaped faces covered with decorated glass. The front face is tinted blue and reads, "James A Vandyke 5" above an image of fire axes crossed over a speaking trumpet on a smokey scrollwork background. Moving clockwise, the next face is on untinted glass and is decorated with the shield from the Great Seal with leaves and flowers above, and leaves and an acorn below. The rear face is open. The final face is tinted red and is decorated with a scene of firefighters with early engine, ladder, and hose apparatuses battling a fire in a block of buildings. A large lone firefighter emerges from the door of the largest building. A flag atop the building is visible through the smoke and flames. The lantern is topped by a pair of rounded discs which support the eagle. The lower and larger disc has large round vent holes around its underside. The lantern is affixed to a black wooden base with an upright panel in front of the lantern's open face. A candle-shaped electric light and an oil lamp are both included.
