Model

Propeller Pewabic

One model of the package freighter, "Pewabic," of the Lake Superior Transit Company. The model was made by Raymond Kaiser and depicts an early propeller-driven steamship that carried freight and passengers between Great Lakes ports on Lake Superior and Lake Erie. The ship has a small bridge structure with a single mast and cargo boom. Passenger accommodations were provided on the upper deck with cargo being carried on the lower decks. The model is made primarily of wood with fittings made of metal, plastic, paper, and thread. The upper deck surfaces are painted white and light blue. The sides of the bridge and passenger cabins have a natural wood finish. The topsides of the hull are painted dark green. The underside of the hull, below the waterline, is painted white. The ship name, "Pewabic," is shown in white lettering on the sides of the hull at the bow.

The model is mounted on a rectangular oak wood base. The top surface is covered with a black Formica panel. A rectangular paper label with black text is mounted beneath clear plastic near the front right corner of the black Formica panel. The label gives details about the ship which was launched in Cleveland in 1863 and sank off of Thunder Bay in Lake Huron on August 9, 1865, as a result of a collision with the Propeller Meteor. Also, a clear acrylic protective cover is included which covers the entire model and fits into a groove between the outer edge of the wood base and the Formica top panel.
