The painting shows a head and shoulders portrait of the subject who is wearing a white shirt with a dark-colored bow tie and coat. The artist has signed his name "E. [Edward] Bowers, Detroit, 1865," near the right shoulder of the subject. The painting is held in a decorative gold-colored wood frame.
