Watercolor head-and-shoulders portrait of Joseph Griffin, depicting him with very light skin, brown eyes and hair, and wearing a dark blue suitcoat, vest, and bowtie. "Joseph Griffin, born Detroit, Mich. Aug. 17, 1858; died and buried in the state of Texas, Nov. 28, 1881," is handwritten on the edges of the recto.
