Patch, Insignia

One pair of shoulder board patches worn by ship captain, Morgan L. Howell. The patches are generally rectangular in shape, but have a point at the top edge. The upper sides of the patches are made of black wool which has been sewn over a slightly curved metal or plastic base. Four gold-colored stripes are sewn across the black wool and an embroidered anchor insignia is located above the stripes. A small brass button with an anchor and laurel wreath design is sewn at the pointed top edge. The button has raised letters that show "USMS" [United States Maritime Service]. The underside of each patch is finished with black acetate covering that shows the manufacturer's company emblem, "Vanguard." A long black vinyl strap with a snap at one end is sewn to the underside to allow for attachment of the patch to a jacket or shirt.
