Souvenir

One souvenir letter opener from the passenger steamship, SS SOUTH AMERICAN, of the Chicago, Duluth & Georgian Bay Transit Company. The opener is cut from a piece of sheet brass (approximately 1 mm thick). It has a wide, rounded handle that tapers to a sharp point. The edges of the blade are slightly beveled to create a cutting edge. A circular stamped brass medallion is attached to one side of the handle which shows a raised image of a ship's wheel, a bow image of a steamship, and engraved text that reads "Lake Trips That Have No Equal, C.D.&G.B.T.Co." Adjacent engraved text on the lower part of the handle reads "S.S. South American." No manufacturer's name or marks are shown.
