Stein

One beer stein made by Villeroy & Boch of Mettlach, Germany. The cylindrically-shaped stein is made of cream-colored glazed ceramic pottery. It has a rounded rim at the top, a decorative pewter hinged lid, and a round handle at the side. The sides are painted with a colorful scene that shows a heavy-set man, who is dressed in the style of a cavalier, and is holding up a tall leather boot. Two large wooden beer barrels are resting on cradles beside him. An overhead scroll has English and German fraktur text that reads "Falstaff" and "Ob Stiefel oder Fass, Falstaff, trinkt ex, ohn' Spass! [Whether boot or barrel, drink it, no joking!]" A red band encircles the base of the stein. Stamped text near the top of the handle reads "1/2 L [liter]." The lid underside is inscribed with text that reads "Ed. Churchill." The stein underside is stamped with a decorative manufacturer's logo and text that reads "Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach," and "Made in Germany." Adjacent stamped text reads "983 Geschutzt," as well as the numbers, "1909," "30," and "05."
