Stein
One beer stein made of light gray glazed ceramic pottery. The sides curve outward slightly to form a base that is wider than the top. The stein has a thin, rounded rim at the top, a decorative pewter hinged lid, and a curved handle at the side. The sides are covered with elaborate blue/gray relief scrollwork designs and a tavern scene with the year "1588." Two separate head and upper torso images of men are also shown and each is holding up a shield-shaped scroll with blue German fraktur text. One scroll has text that reads "Halt Maas u. Ziel, Trink nie zuviel [Maintain measure and moderation, never drink too much]," and the other reads "Das beste Maas ist Mittel-strass [The best measure is the middle of the road]." Stamped text near the top of the handle reads "0.5L [liter]." The underside is stamped with the number, "375." No manufacturer's name or marks are visible.
