Stein

One beer stein made by the Rosskopf & Gerz factory of Germany. It is made of cream-colored glazed ceramic pottery with sides curve outward slightly to form a base that is wider than the top. The tall stein has a thin, rounded top rim, a decorative pewter hinged lid, and a tall handle at the side. The sides are covered with an elaborate colorful relief image that depicts a woodland scene with man who is dressed in the style of a cavalier and a young maiden who is wearing in a long dress and is holding a trumpet. A decorative cream/green/black scrollwork design on the handle side of the stein has incised black text that reads "Bei Spiel u. Sang Trinke Noch Lang [At Play and Song, Drink Long]." The underside is stamped with the catalog number, "454" for the stein design entitled, "The Surprise." No manufacturer's name or marks are visible. The lid underside is inscribed with text that reads "Ed. Churchill, 1908."
