Stein

One beer stein made by the J. W. [Johann Wilhelm] Remy factory of Hohr, Germany. The stein is made of partially-glazed ceramic pottery with straight sides that taper outward slightly to form a base that is wider than the top. The tall stein has a thin, rounded top rim, a flat pewter/ceramic hinged lid, and a decorative rounded handle at the side. The sides of the stein shows a multi-color image of a tavern scene. Vertical white scrolls on either side of the handle have incised black German fraktur text that reads "Bier und frohes Lied, Macht nie Lebensmud [Beer and a happy song never let life become tiresome]." Incised text on the top of the lid reads "Prosit! [May it benefit/good health!]." The outer edge of the lid underside is inscribed with text that reads "Gus Strenger, 1908." Stamped text near the top of the handle reads "1L [liter]." Black incised text near the bottom of the handle shows the number, "866." The underside is stamped with the manufacturer's logo, "JWR," the number, "866," and "Germany." The number, "866," is the catalog number for the stein design, "Tavern Scene."
