Stein
One beer stein made by the Reinhold Hanke factory of Hohr, Germany. The stein is made of glazed bone white ceramic pottery with curved sides that flare outward slightly to form a base that is wider than the top. The stein has a thin, rounded top rim, a decorative pewter hinged lid, and a rounded handle at the side. The side opposite the handle shows an elaborate colorful relief image that depicts a man playing cards while seated at a table. Dark green incised German fraktur text above the image reads "Sitzt du beim Scat, bleib ruhig dabei, deine Frau schimpft so gut um 10 wie um 2. [If you are sitting in a Scat game, stay with it, your wife will be scolding you at 10 as well as at 2]." The handle side of the stein is decorated with white leafy hops vines and barley stalks on a dark green background. Stamped text near the top of the handle reads "0.5L [liter]." The underside is stamped with the number, "1405," and "Germany." The manufacturer's mark is not visible. The number, "1405," is the catalog number for the stein design, "Card Player."
