Stein
One beer stein made by the Matthias Girmscheid factory of Hohr, Germany. The stein is made of glazed tan ceramic pottery with straight sides and a base that tapers outward slightly. It has a thin, rounded top rim, a decorative pewter hinged lid, and a decorative handle at the side that depicts two intertwined hops vines. The side opposite the handle shows a red/green/tan relief image that depicts a young maiden and a man who are dressed in medieval peasant attire and are preparing to part company. Adjacent relief images show the maiden weeping and the man waving goodbye. The three scenes are framed with decorative scrollwork designs. Narrow bands of small raised leaf designs are located above and below the relief scenes. A tan banner at the base has green incised German text that reads "Morgen, muss ich fort von hier. [Tomorrow, I just go forth from here]." Small raised text under the handle shows the number, "706." The underside is stamped with the numbers, "119/18J" and "9." The number, "706," is the catalog number for the stein design, "Farewell Scene."
