Trumpet, Speaking

Silver trumpet; Firefighter's speaking trumpet or bugle decorated with several engravings including embossed scrollwork bands around its mouthpiece, the flares on each end of its neck, and around the opening at its base. On its front is an embossed engraving of an eagle bearing a shield, arrows, and olive branches, which resembles the Great Seal. Below lays an embossed engraving of a hand-pumped fire engine. Above the eagle, an engraved leaf pattern leads to an embossed engraved floral pattern on the trumpet's side. A silver chain connected at the embossed bands on each end of its neck is also attached on this side. On its rear, an embossed engraving of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom sits above an embossed shield bearing the following inscription:

"Presented to the Fire Brigade of Detroit by the inhabitants of Windsor & Sandwich as a testimonial of their gratitude for their noble and generous conduct in crossing the river under the directions of Mr. Duncan the Chief Engineer during the intensely cold night of the 16th of April 1849 with their engines by means of which under their able and unwearied exertions and management the total destruction of the Village of Windsor by fire was mainly prevented."
