Digital scan of a sepia-toned photo of the underpinning of the Hugo W. Schmidt Company building and the adjacent building containing Riverside Lunch at the southeast corner of Randolph Street and Atwater Street. A large hole has been dug in the ground in the center of the street. Beams buttress the walls of the buildings. Scaffolding has been erected at the intersection of Randolph and Atwater at the far right, and a sign for the contractors Stewart and Welch, Incorporated has been posted on it. "Detroit and Canada Tunnel Contract - Section 5; Underpinning @ Darmstaetter Property - from Northwest. Aug 21, 1929. 8A-27," was handwritten on the verso.
