The image looks north on American Avenue toward the intersection at Joy Road and shows a row of one-story brick buildings with various small stores/shops. One or more of the buildings is on fire and a Detroit Fire Department truck is parked in the street intersection. Several cars are parked on American Avenue in the foreground and crowds of onlookers are standing on both street corners. A sign for the "J & J Patent Medicine" store is visible at the center of the photo.
