Negative, Glass-plate

Monochromatic glass-plate negative (and black and white print) of a drum corps composed of uniformed Spanish-American War veterans from Wichita, Kansas posed on the lawn in front of the Belle Isle Casino during the National Convention of the United Spanish War Veterans held on August 29, 1927. Four of the men are drummers, one holds a fife, and a seven man in a suit decorated with medals posed beside them. The bass drum's skin is painted with the text, "Spanish War Veterans, Wichita Kansas," along with both the American and Puerto Rican flags. The field is littered with garbage, cars line the drive way in the background, and numerous figures are in and around the Casino. The negative was previously housed in a non-archival envelope with the pre-printed return address, "H.W. Johns-Manville Co., 72 Jefferson Avenue, Detroit, Mich. Asbestos & Magnesia Products." A handwritten note along the right edge of the envelope read, "462, Kansas Drum Corp. United Spanish War Veterans, 2nd Prize in Band Competition, B. Isle 8/29/27, Convention."
