Sepia-toned cabinet card photo showing the head and shoulders of a fireman. He appears to be seated and is wearing a dress uniform that consists of a double-breasted coat and hat. The hat badge and coat badge both show the number, "220." The name of the photographic studio is printed in gold-colored ink on the bottom of the photo: "Smith, 244 Woodward Avenue, Detroit." Handwriting on the verso shows "#17" and "Captain Richard Filban; Alert H & L [Hook & Ladder] #3, 1881; killed at Ferry Seed."
