Cabinet card bearing a sepia-toned half length portrait photo of Captain Frederick William Swift of the 17th Michigan Volunteers wearing a Union uniform. The handwritten inscription "Yours Truly F. W. Swift. Capt. 17th Mich Vols." is along the bottom border of the card. "17th Mich Inf" and "? F. W. Swift Capt. 17th Mich Vols." are handwritten on the verso. A partial printing of an American flag remains on the center of the verso, where the surface of the card was damaged.
