Black and white photograph showing a left side profile view of an American Airways Ford Tri-Motor airplane parked outside of an aircraft hangar. A label taped to the photograph reads "FROM AMERICAN AIRLINES / One of the most famous of the early air transports was the Ford Tri-Motor. When it made its debut in the late 1920s, it represented a vast improvement over any airliner then flying. American Airways, the immediate predecessor of American Airlines, Inc., operated a fleet of the Fords when it was the 'workhorse of the air.' Shown here is Tri-Motor NC9683 which American recently purchased -- again -- for presentation in the Smithsonian Institution upon completion of its air museum." A stamp on the verso reads "FROM AMERICAN AIRLINES / Ford Tri-Motor / Photo # 3-1-A."
