Black and white photo with the handwritten caption, "'S.S. SOUTH AMERICAN' - at Mackinac Island, 8-1-'49", depicting the Chicago, Duluth and Georgian Bay Transit Company passenger steamer SOUTH AMERICAN docked at Mackinac Island from a neighboring pier off of the ship's port bow. Two figures hunch over one of the bollards to which the ship is moored. A two story building along the dock is visible on the left in the background, and the dock on which the photographer is standing extends on the right. Two more figures stand onboard near the bow. The photo has beveled edges. "Photo by B.H. Nichols Neg. No. 370," and "1988," are stamped on the verso of one copy and "Mackinaw Island 1949," is handwritten on the verso of another.
