Black and white photographic print of a portrait of Frederick E. Cohen displayed in the Jewish Life and Culture exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum. Signage displayed below the painting reads, "Frederick E. Cohen, Frederick E. Cohen was both the first Jewish businessman whose advertisement is known and the first Detroit Jewish Artist. He came to Detroit from Woodstock, Canada in 1837. He was endowed by nature with more than the usual share of talent, good looks, elements and wit. Cohen first painted decorative panels for passenger boats and was soon given many commission for portraits by several citizens of prominence. Cohen was the first teacher of both L.T. Ives and Robert Hopkin. He left for Oberlin, Ohio, where he died of a hunting accident. Self-Portrait. This self-portrait of Frederick E. Cohen was one of the prize possessions of Robert Hopkin the Detroit Artist who had been given his first lessons and inspiration by Cohen. Loan of the Detroit Institute of Arts."
