Black and white photo of Works Progress Administration workers cleaning out the bed of a partially drained canal on Belle Isle. The men dig with shovels around piles of earth scattered along the canal bed. Several pickup trucks are being employed in the effort in the distance. A pool of water remains in the lower left corner of the image, fed by a small stream along the center of the canal bed. A road runs to the right of the canal, and a bridge spans the canal in the background. The trees are bare. "4- 5/37 Belle Isle - W.P.A. men cleaning out Canal," is handwritten into the photo's bottom border.
