One black and white photograph of the Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation construction staging area for the Lakehead Pipeline crossing of the Straits of Mackinac. The photo shows a close-up view of a steel float that has been lashed to a pipeline to facilitate the placement operations when it is pulled into Lake Michigan. A coil of rope and a small marker buoy rest on top of the float. Other sections of steel pipelines can be seen on the ground to the left and right. A long line of evergreen trees is visible in the background. Black ink stamps on the verso read "Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corp. Photo," and "Aug. 8, 1953." The staging area was located west of St. Ignace, Michigan.
