One black and white photograph of the Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation construction staging area for the Lakehead Pipeline crossing of the Straits of Mackinac. The photo shows the end of a long steel pipeline section being lifted by a crane. A heavy cable has been attached to the pipe end in preparation for pulling the section into Lake Michigan. Large steel floats have been lashed to the pipeline in order to facilitate its placement as it is pulled into the water. Other pipeline sections can be seen at the right side of the photo. Black ink stamps on the verso read "Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corp. Photo," and "Aug. 11, 1953." Handwritten blue ink text reads "Looking south from the hold back head." The staging area was located west of St. Ignace, Michigan.
