One black and white photograph of the Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation construction staging area for the Lakehead Pipeline crossing of the Straits of Mackinac. The photo shows a long section of steel pipeline being pulled into Lake Michigan. The pipeline rests on steel cradles with rollers. Large steel floats have been lashed to the top of the pipeline along with coils of rope and attached buoys which will help to facilitate the pipeline placement after it is pulled into the water. A surveyor's transit is mounted on a platform over the pipe in order to check the alignment. A "Control Tower" building can be seen at the center right side of the photo. Black ink stamps on the verso read "Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corp. Photo," and "Sep. 17, 1953." The staging area was located west of St. Ignace, Michigan.
