Print, Photographic

One black and white photograph of the Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation construction staging area for the Lakehead Pipeline crossing of the Straits of Mackinac. The photo shows a long section of steel pipeline being prepared for pulling into Lake Michigan. The pipeline rests on steel cradles with rollers at the shoreline. Large steel floats have been lashed to the top of the pipeline which will help to facilitate the pipeline placement after it is pulled into the water. Two workmen can be seen on the deck of a small barge at the end of the pipeline section which is resting on a floating cradle. A "Control Tower" building can be seen on shore in the right background. Black ink stamps on the verso read "Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corp. Photo," and "Sep. 17, 1953." The staging area was located west of St. Ignace, Michigan.
