One black and white photograph of the Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation construction staging area for the Lakehead Pipeline crossing of the Straits of Mackinac. The photo shows a long section of steel pipeline which is resting on a cradle with rollers at the shoreline and also a floating cradle that is tied to the shore. The end of the pipeline has a large steel float attached to the top which is about the enter the water as the pipe is pulled slowly out toward Lake Michigan. In the left background, a "Control Tower" building can be seen on shore. Evergreen trees and a rip rap breakwater are visible in the center and right background. Black ink stamps on the verso read "Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corp. Photo," and "Sep. 17, 1953." The staging area was located west of St. Ignace, Michigan, at Pointe La Barbe.
