One black and white photograph of the Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corporation construction staging area for the Lakehead Pipeline crossing of the Straits of Mackinac. The photo shows a long section of steel pipeline which is resting on a floating cradle that is tied to the shore. The end of the pipeline has a large steel float attached to the top which has just entered the water as the pipe is being pulled slowly out toward Lake Michigan. The company flag logo, a galloping black horse, is painted on the side of the float. A small barge and several workmen can be seen at the right side of the photo. Evergreen trees and a rip rap breakwater are visible in the center and right background. Black ink stamps on the verso read "Merritt-Chapman & Scott Corp. Photo," and "Sep. 17, 1953." The staging area was located west of St. Ignace, Michigan, at Pointe La Barbe.
