Sepia photograph of the fatal accident of SMIRNOFF, (U-80), driven by Chuck Thompson, in heat 3A of the1966 Gold Cup Race on the Detroit River. The boat hit a wave, exploded, flipped and sank, as the boats were headed down the main straightaway toward the Belle Isle Bridge on their first lap. Another boat can be seen behind SMIRNOFF in the picture.
