Sepia-toned photo of Monroe Avenue north of Campus Martius as taken from the southwest, presumably from the Hammond Building. The Detroit Opera House stands at the north end of Campus Martius at the lower left corner of frame. Signs hung on its exterior indicate that its occupied by Hamlin and Fordyce Real Estate, the American Radiator Company, the Michigan Phonograph Company, the Industrial Building and Loan Association, the National Loan and Investment Company, a florist, the Merchant Tailors Misfit Clothing Parlors, and Mills and Gibb. Wright, Kay and Company is to the left of the Opera House, and Michell's is to its right. Monroe Avenue extends in to the background to the right of the center of frame. Signs for the People's Shoe House and McLennan and Company, Dry Goods, are on the awnings of the Second Williams Block on Monroe. The side of Charles H. Werner, Crockery and Glassware is visible on the west side of Monroe. Seed Warehouses A and B of D.M. Ferry and Company, the Hotel Ste. Claire on the north corner of Monroe and Randolph Street. Gratiot Avenue extends to the horizon in the background to the left of the center of frame. A horse-drawn streetcar is visible on Monroe. A moonlight tower stands in the foreground on the left.
