Caption on verso reads: 7. Showing how silicon carbide swells, oxidizes, and disintegrates at a low temperature when exposed for a long time to oxidizing conditions, due to the formation of cristobalite. Note that the interiors of the cylinders are white because of the cristobalite developed.
