Print, Photographic
Black and white photographic print mounted on fabric depicting the inside of the Dressler Kiln at the Champion Porcelain Co.
Caption on verso reads: Dressler Kiln after shut-down in August 1927, after 21 months' continuous oil firing.
Detail of one of the openings on west side which caused leaks, photograph showing carborundum sections #23 and #24. Note particularly that the carborundum-clay mortar has oxidized and expanded and bowed in and out relative to relieve this expansion. This shows that the joint opened up prior to or simultaneous with the oxidation, i.e., while the kiln was firing. See also photo #85592 and #85629. In #85590 note that the joint has opened wider at the top than at the bottom. This may possibly be explained by the fact that the kiln was under greater oxidation at the bottom than at the top and caused a slight swelling at the bottom.
