After the ware comes from the kiln it is carefully inspected. The different kinds of defects in the bad ware are carefully listed and charged back to the various departments at fault. The good or number one ware, is decorated. This decorating, or printing, is done on specially designed printing presses built in our shops. (See photograph)
The cores are placed on spindles mounted on a turn-table which carries them to a revolving head on which is mounted a suitable rubber type. This prints the decoration or trade-mark on the glazed porcelain core. Continuous rotation of the turn-table carries the cores to the position at the right, as shown in the photograph, from which they are removed by the operator and placed one in each of the 20 slots in the "gate". One movement of this gate occurs automatically for each complete revolution of the turn-table and permits 20 cores at a time to drop into line with the receiving ends of as many electrically heated nickel tubes. Each repetition of this movement cause all the cores in each tube to move the length of one core toward the discharge end and the delivery of 20 completed cores.
