One sepia-toned photograph of a large 2-story white house located at 353 Woodward Avenue (west side) in Detroit. The photo shows cobblestone pavement, streetcar tracks, a sidewalk, and a decorative iron fence with gate in the foreground. The house and a yard with large trees can be seen in the background. Handwritten text on the verso (written by the donor's aunt, Miss Caroline E. Campbell) reads: "The Old Duffield House built by Rev. Geo. Duffield, D.D., on the corner of Woodward Ave. and High St. (then called George St.). In this house, Father and his family and John Harvey and his family lived for several years, 1869 (?) to 1874, when we moved to Columbia St., where the Twentieth Century Building now stands, and in May, 1876, we moved to 46 West Montcalm St. John Harvey remodeled the house as a double house and here at different times lived Dr. E. A. Lodge, Dr. C. A. Devendorf, and finally it was demolished. When we went to live there, there was an apple orchard where Duffield St. is now, and no house as far back as Park St., except the hired man's. Next door north lived the David Whitney family and next to them the Esseltynes [Esselstyns]. There was a wonderful garden; ivy from C. E. Campbell, Melrose Abbey, growing on the north side of the house to the top of the house; primroses, daffodils, etc. from England. The white fringe tree at the Island grew here and maybe only one survives at the island."
