Black and white photograph of a demolition and construction site south of Jefferson Avenue near the riverfront, likely for the Veterans Memorial Building. New sewer lines are ready to be placed in ground, as construction workers on the left side of the image insert a steel beam into the ground. Visible on the right side of the photograph in the foreground are the foundations from the buildings which were recently demolished. The Guardian Building is visible in the left background, adjacent to the Guardian is Hotel Fort Pontchartrain. The Vernors building is visible in the right background adjacent to the construction. The date and photograph number are printed on the lower right corner, "10-15-47, 174253." Written on the verso, "Grading where old buildings were removed along the Detroit waterfront. Note metal pipe in line used to drive into excavations, ready to pour the concrete, for piling to support building." Also, stamped on verso, "Manning Bros. Commercial Photographers, 16300 Brush Street (Block South of 6 Mile) Highland, Park 3, Mich."
