Black and white photographic print depicting a Model Yacht Regatta held in Belle Isle's model yacht basin, as taken from the eastern end of the basin, facing west. Several model boats are in the water, as well as two figures in a row boat waiting near the west end of the basin. A full size sail is visible near the basin's northwestern corner. Participants, some holding model yachts, and spectators line the southern edge of the basin. Beyond them, parked cars and traffic can be seen along the Strand. Caption on verso reads: Heave Ho M'Hardies - - raise you sails and launch your craft for the 52nd Annual Metropolitan Detroit Model Yacht Regatta at the Belle Isle Yacht Basin on Saturday, June 9, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Conducted by the Vocational Education Department of the Detroit Public Schools and sponsored by McDonald's Restaurants, the event is expected to attract over 300 boys and girls, 11 to 14 years old, who have been constructing their scale model craft for the past 10 months. They'll be competing for trophies, ribbons and valuable prizes contributed by McDonald's.
