Black and white photo of the bow and starboard side of the Mohawk Navigation Company freighter CAPTAIN C.D. SECORD, its decks covered in ice, as it becomes the last boat to pass downbound through the Soo Locks in the 1946 season. Two sailors peer over the side of the freighter toward a figure standing on the shore holding one of the vessel's lines. "Ice Covered Second - Last Boat Downbound - Season 1946," is typewritten on the verso. "It's a rugged life afloat for these freighters' crews when the stormy days of late autumn arrive. Here we see the last ship to lock through at the Soo, downbound, after a stormy passage down Superior, ending that year's navigation." is typewritten on a caption pasted to the verso.
