Black and white photo taken from an elevated position at the south end of Capitol Park and facing northeast along State Street from Griswold Street. The Chamber of Commerce Building is visible in the left foreground on the north side of State Street, and it houses Baumgartner's Fashion Shop, the Hyde Real Estate Company, and the Law Offices of L and H. H. Smilansky. On the south side of State Street are Hugh Connolly, Jeweler; G.W. Needels Credit Clothing; Richter's Hotel with an attached cafe and bar; Ettlinger's; and Williams Suits, Coats, Dresses, and Furs. The Crowley Milner Company stands in the far background where Gratiot Avenue bends at Farmer Street. The Belt Streetcar is headed west on State and carries an advertisement for Visitors Day on Friday, October 1 at the Y.M.C.A. as well as a men's mass meeting on Sunday. A truck piled high with trunks makes a left turn onto State around a similarly burdened cart from an alley on the south side of State. Pedestrians crowd the sidewalks. "Safety First" signs can be seen on several of the posts along the street. Handwritten text on the verso reads "State St. 'Petticoat Lane' Detroit" and stamped text reads "L.S. Glover Commercial Photographer, 71 Hanover Ave. Detroit, Walnut 2333-W."
