Print, Photographic

Sepia-toned photo of the Gar Wood 33-50 and 28-55 runabouts taking part in the Harmsworth Cup "Free-For-All" race on the Detroit River in September 1930. The 33-50, number 12, passes with its starboard side toward the camera. The 33-50, driven by Eugene Kettering, passes, slightly ahead, in the middleground. Charles Kettering's yacht the OLIVE K. and the U.S. Navy ship DUBUQUE are in the background. Crew members aboard each watch from the decks. A typewritten caption on Advertisers Incorporated stationery pasted to the verso reads:

Gar Wood Stock Runabout Winning Free For All
A standard stock 28 foot, 55-mile-an-hour runabout built by Gar Wood Incorporated of Marysville, Michigan winning first place in the "Free-for-all" at the Harmsworth races in Detroit last September. Second place also was won by a Gar Wood 33-foot, 50 mile an hour, stock runabout. The 28-55, latest model to be added to the Gar Wood line, is claimed to be the fastest stock motor boat built.
